How to Do a Kettlebell Turkish Get-Up

How to do a Turkish get-up with a kettlebell — step by step. Stand up from the floor while keeping the bell locked out overhead. Eyes on the bell the whole time. Slow practice, not a race.

  1. 1.Lie on your back. Press the kettlebell up with one arm. Bend the same-side knee; free arm and leg long on the floor.
  2. 2.Keep your eyes on the kettlebell. Wrist stacked over the shoulder.
  3. 3.Roll to your elbow, then to your hand. Lift your hip before you sweep the leg.
  4. 4.Pause in half-kneeling with the overhead arm vertical, then stand.
  5. 5.Reverse every step to return to the floor. Same path down as up.

Why learn the Turkish get-up

The get-up teaches packed shoulders, hip mobility, and full-body tension under a load. It is one half of Simple & Sinister (with the swing). Worth learning if you want a skill you can practice for years — not a day-one closet circuit move.

Common mistakes

Rushing the steps so the bell drifts behind the head. Looking away from the kettlebell. Sweeping the leg before the hip is high. Soft elbow on the way up. Fix: pause at elbow, hand, hip, kneel, and stand — eyes on the bell.

Weight and practice

Stay light until the steps are quiet. An 8–12 kg kettlebell is enough to start. Shoe-on-fist or empty hand first if the pattern is new. Go heavier only after the get-up is smooth. In Simple & Sinister you do 10 get-ups per session (5 per side).

FAQ

Is the Turkish get-up worth learning?
Yes if you want a durable strength skill and you follow Simple & Sinister or similar practice. It is slow and technical — that is the point.
Should beginners do Turkish get-ups?
Not as a day-one closet beginner move. Learn the swing hinge first, then drill the get-up unloaded or very light. If you are not ready for get-ups yet, use the beginner workouts on this site.
What weight for Turkish get-ups?
Light until the steps are quiet. An 8–12 kg kettlebell is enough to start. Go heavier only after the get-up is smooth.
How does the Turkish get-up fit Simple & Sinister?
Each S&S session is 100 swings (10×10) plus 10 get-ups. The get-up is the skill half of the practice — see the Simple & Sinister guide and video workout on this site.
Why is the Turkish get-up so slow?
Each step is a pause: elbow, hand, hip, knee, stand. If you rush, the kettlebell drifts and you lose the shoulder pack.
