How to Do a Kettlebell Deadlift

Kettlebell deadlift form is a hip hinge with a long spine — pick the bell up from the floor, stand tall, set it down the same way. Not a squat. Own this before you chase swing volume.

Own the hinge before you chase swing density. The kettlebell deadlift is the floor pickup with a long spine — hips back, brace, stand tall. Same groove the swing needs; slower and easier to film.

New to kettlebells? Start on the beginner kettlebell workout hub, then run beginner fundamentals. Once the hinge is quiet, use the kettlebell swing page — the swing page sends you here when the hike rounds.

Timed sessions that use the deadlift live on the 20-minute and single-bell hubs — still form-first, still video.

  1. 1.Stand with the kettlebell between your feet (or just outside for sumo). Soft knees, eyes forward.
  2. 2.Push your hips back until you can grab the handle without rounding your back. Shins stay near vertical.
  3. 3.Brace your lats and belly, then stand up by driving the hips forward. Do not yank the kettlebell.
  4. 4.Finish tall: ribs down, glutes tight, shoulders packed. Do not lean back.
  5. 5.For a suitcase or offset deadlift, do not side-bend. Keep your ribs square over your hips.
  6. 6.Lower the kettlebell the same way you stood up — hinge, long spine, set it down under control.

Setup

Bell between the feet for a conventional hinge, or slightly wider for sumo. Soften the knees, then push the hips back until the hands reach the handle without the low back rounding. Pack the lats before the bell leaves the floor — the deadlift starts braced, not yanked.

Hinge vs squat

A deadlift is a hip hinge: hips travel back, shins stay close to vertical, torso leans. A squat drops the hips down with more knee bend. If your knees shoot forward and you sit into the rep, you are squatting the deadlift. Film a side view — the hinge groove is the same one you need for swings.

Suitcase and offset

Suitcase (one bell at the side) and offset deadlifts load anti-side-bend. Keep ribs square; do not lean away from the bell. Same hinge pattern, higher core demand. Drop weight if you cannot stay stacked.

Common mistakes

Rounding to reach the handle. Squatting instead of hinging. Yanking the bell with the arms before the hips drive. Side-bending on suitcase/offset reps. Leaning back at the top. Fix: lighter bell, longer pause at the bottom, film a side view until the spine stays long.

Weight and sets

Most people deadlift heavier than they press, often similar to or heavier than they swing. Beginners: a bell you can hinge for 8–12 clean reps with a quiet low back (often 12–24 kg; women often 12–16 kg; men often 16–24 kg). Practice sets of 5–10, rest as needed — form over load. Drop 4 kg if the spine rounds.

When not to deadlift

Skip loaded deadlifts if you cannot hinge without rounding, if low-back pain spikes on the pickup, or if you are still learning to find the hinge unloaded. Practice the hip push-back with no bell or a light one first. Acute low-back pain on the brace is a stop — not a cue to yank harder. Once the hinge is quiet, return to swings.

FAQ

What are the main kettlebell deadlift form cues?
Hips back, long spine, grab the handle without rounding, brace the lats, stand by driving the hips forward, finish tall with ribs down. Lower the same way. Arms guide — they do not yank.
Is a kettlebell deadlift a squat or a hip hinge?
A hip hinge. Shins stay near vertical and the hips travel back. If your knees shoot forward and you sit down into the rep, you are squatting the deadlift.
Why learn the kettlebell deadlift before swings?
The swing is a dynamic hinge. If you cannot pick the bell up with a long spine, the hike and snap will load the low back. Fix the deadlift hinge first, then return to swings.
What weight should a beginner use for kettlebell deadlifts?
A bell you can hinge for 8–12 clean reps without rounding. Many people start 12–24 kg (women often 12–16 kg; men often 16–24 kg). Go lighter if the spine rounds or you side-bend on suitcase reps.
What are the most common kettlebell deadlift mistakes?
Rounding to reach the handle, squatting instead of hinging, yanking with the arms, side-bending on suitcase/offset reps, and leaning back at lockout. Film a side view and drop weight until the spine stays long.
What should I do after I own the kettlebell deadlift?
Move to the kettlebell swing once the hinge is quiet, then run beginner fundamentals and timed one-bell sessions on the beginner, 20-minute, and single-bell hubs. Deadlift stays useful whenever the swing groove gets noisy.
