How to Do a Kettlebell Snatch

Kettlebell snatch form is the swing hike taken overhead — high-pull, punch, bell rolls onto the forearm at lockout. Hips do the work. Not a muscle curl or a yank with the arm.

Own the kettlebell swing hike before you chase snatch volume. Same hip snap — then high-pull, punch, soft forearm landing at lockout. Not a curl. Browse all moves on the kettlebell exercises hub.

New to kettlebells? Start on the beginner kettlebell workout hub, then run beginner fundamentals. Keep the swing hinge quiet — snatch work pairs with hinge practice, not instead of it. For squat-to-press density instead of overhead ballistic, see the kettlebell thruster.

Timed sessions that use the snatch live on the 20-minute and single-bell hubs — still form-first, still video. Prefer a denser one-bell complex? 20-min complex AMRAP keeps lunges and swings in the mix without forcing snatch volume.

  1. 1.Use the same hike as the kettlebell swing. Load the hips; do not pull early with the arm.
  2. 2.As the bell floats past the hips, high-pull — elbow high, bell close — then punch through so it rolls onto the forearm.
  3. 3.Lock out with the bicep by the ear, ribs down, wrist stacked, feet planted. Soft elbow is not a finish.
  4. 4.Lower on the same path into the backswing. Guide the bell; do not crash it into the hike.
  5. 5.Keep the grip loose enough to let the bell roll — a death grip flips the handle into the forearm.
  6. 6.If you cannot punch or the forearm takes a smash every rep, drop 4 kg and slow the float.

Hike to punch

Own the swing hike first. The snatch is that same hip snap with a redirect: float, high-pull close to the body, punch the hand through so the bell lands softly on the forearm. If the arm yanks early, the bell will smash or stall — hips first, same as the swing.

Muscles worked

Glutes and hamstrings drive the hike. Lats keep the bell close on the float. Shoulders and triceps own the lockout. Grip and forearm absorb the roll — soft hand, stacked wrist. Full-body ballistic; the arm is the redirect, not the engine.

Snatch vs swing vs clean

A Russian swing floats to chest height. A clean parks in the rack. A snatch finishes locked out overhead on the same hike path. Learn the swing hinge before snatch volume. High-pull practice helps the redirect if the punch feels late.

Common mistakes

Curling or early-arming the bell. Death-gripping so the handle flips into the forearm. Soft lockout with flared ribs. Crashing the lower into the backswing. Going too heavy to snap. Fix: lighter bell, looser grip at the punch, film a side view until the float and roll look quiet.

Weight and sets

Most people snatch lighter than they swing two-hand and similar to or lighter than a one-hand swing. Beginners: a bell you can snatch for 5–8 clean reps per side with a soft forearm landing (often 8–16 kg; women often 8–12 kg; men often 12–16 kg). Drop 4 kg if every rep smashes. Practice sets of 5/side — form over volume.

When not to snatch

Skip loaded snatches if the swing hinge still rounds, if the shoulder pinches at lockout, or if the forearm takes a beating every punch. Own the swing and a quiet clean/rack first. Acute shoulder or low-back pain on the float is a stop — not a cue to yank harder.

FAQ

What are the main kettlebell snatch form cues?
Same hike as the swing, high-pull close, punch so the bell rolls onto the forearm, lock out by the ear with ribs down, lower on the same path. Hips drive — the arm redirects.
Is a kettlebell snatch just a swing gone overhead?
Same hike and hip snap as the swing, plus a high-pull and punch to lockout. If you only muscle the bell up with the arm, it is not a snatch.
Why does the kettlebell smash my forearm on snatches?
Usually a death grip or a late punch. Loosen the hand at the top so the bell can roll on; punch through earlier; drop weight until the landing is quiet.
What weight should a beginner use for kettlebell snatches?
A bell you can snatch for 5–8 clean reps per side without smashing the forearm. Many people start 8–16 kg (women often 8–12 kg; men often 12–16 kg). Own the swing hike first — go lighter if the float disappears.
What are the most common kettlebell snatch mistakes?
Early-arming / curling, death grip, soft lockout, crashing the lower, and going too heavy to snap. Film a side view and drop 4 kg until the roll looks soft.
What should I do after I own the kettlebell snatch?
Keep the swing hinge sharp, then use snatch work in timed one-bell sessions on the 20-minute and single-bell hubs. Beginner path first if the hike still squats — fundamentals before snatch density.
